Why generic payment setups fail Rwanda

In Rwanda, mobile money is how most people pay day to day, and a card-only checkout leaves out the majority of customers

PROBLEM 01

A cards-only checkout doesn't fit local habits

Mobile wallets such as MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money handle most everyday spending in Rwanda, not cards. Card ownership is limited, so a checkout built only for cards turns away a large share of shoppers.

PROBLEM 02

Standard processors rarely connect to local wallets

Many payment providers built for other regions have no direct link to Rwanda's mobile money networks, forcing merchants to bolt on separate local tools or lose those sales entirely.

PROBLEM 03

Extra middlemen chip away at your margin

Routing payments through a global processor plus a local aggregator plus a settlement partner adds fees and delay at every step, and support becomes harder to reach when something goes wrong.

How Paysnapper works in Rwanda

One integration connects your business to Rwanda's payment rails

Paysnapper keeps a single connection to the mobile money operators, banks, and settlement partners you need, so you plug in once and reach customers however they prefer to pay.

From checkout to money in your account

Step 1. At checkout, the customer pays using MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money, a bank transfer, or a card, whichever they already use.

Step 2. That payment reaches Paysnapper through direct relationships with Rwanda's mobile network operators and banks, without unnecessary middlemen.

Step 3. Funds build up in Rwandan francs on your Paysnapper balance, with a clear record tying every transaction to its payout.

Step 4. From there we convert and pay out in USD, EUR, GBP, USDT, USDC, or BTC, or send it directly to a local or international bank account, on the schedule you choose.

Can a business based outside Rwanda accept mobile money payments?

Yes. Paysnapper acts as the single intermediary between your business and Rwanda's mobile money operators and banks, so you do not need a local entity or a direct relationship with each provider to start collecting payments.

Why Rwanda, why mobile money

Mobile money is already how Rwanda pays

Rwanda has pushed hard toward a cashless economy, and wallets such as MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money are part of daily life for shopping, bill payment, and transfers between family and friends.

01

Mobile money is the backbone

Wallets such as MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money carry a large share of everyday retail and person to person payments across the country, well ahead of card usage.

02

Agent networks extend the reach

A dense network of mobile money agents lets customers cash in and cash out even where formal banking is limited, putting digital payments within reach of nearly everyone.

03

Bank transfer complements mobile wallets

Bank to bank transfers remain useful for larger payments and for customers who prefer to pay directly from an account rather than a wallet.

04

Backed by a clear regulatory framework

Payments in Rwanda operate under the National Bank of Rwanda and its rules for mobile money and payment service providers, giving merchants a stable environment to collect and move funds.

Why prioritize mobile money over cards in Rwanda?

Mobile wallets carry the bulk of everyday digital payments in Rwanda, with far more active wallets than payment cards in circulation. Leading with mobile money, and offering cards as an option, reflects how people actually prefer to pay.

Payouts

How your Rwandan earnings reach you

Collecting Rwandan francs is only half the job. Converting that revenue into something usable, at a fair rate, is where many providers fall short. We convert RWF and pay out in crypto, fiat currency, or straight to your bank, in line with Rwanda's foreign exchange rules.

Crypto

Fits merchants based offshore or keeping treasury in crypto. Choose daily, weekly, or monthly payouts, with no manual conversion needed.

USDT USDC BTC

Fiat

Keep a balance or route funds to a partner account in whatever currency fits your books. Configured per merchant.

USD EUR GBP

Bank

Sent directly to your company's bank account by scheduled wire or SWIFT, along with a reconciliation file linking each payout to the original customer payment.

Wire SWIFT

Multi-jurisdiction

Funds move into the jurisdiction that suits your corporate structure. We operate within Rwanda's foreign exchange and crypto rules set by the National Bank of Rwanda, never around them.

How do I get funds out of Rwandan francs?

Paysnapper converts revenue collected in RWF into USD, EUR, GBP, USDT, USDC, or BTC, or sends it directly to your company bank account. Settlement currency and schedule are agreed per merchant, always within the foreign exchange rules set by the National Bank of Rwanda.

Common Questions

What merchants usually ask first

Which African mobile-money wallets does Paysnapper support? +

We accept through M-Pesa, MTN MoMo, Orange Money, Airtel Money, Wave, and Telecel Cash, across 11 markets: Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Mali, Cameroon, and Benin. The full per-country wallet list lives on each country page under /countries/.

How is Paysnapper different from Stripe, Flutterwave, or Onafriq? +

Stripe doesn’t natively connect to most African mobile-money wallets. Flutterwave is built primarily for African-based merchants accepting payments, including internationally. Onafriq operates a large multi-purpose payments hub for banks, telcos, and other infrastructure partners. Paysnapper is narrower on purpose: we’re the acceptance layer for merchants selling into Africa, with one intermediary between us and the wallet provider, and an Africa-native ops team built around wallet-specific failure modes.

Can I settle revenue from Kenya or Ghana into USD or USDT? +

Yes. Paysnapper settles African mobile-money revenue into both fiat (USD, EUR, GBP and other majors) and crypto (USDT, USDC, BTC). Settlement currency and jurisdiction are configured per merchant. Crypto and FX rules differ by African country, and we follow the local rules per market.

Do you support USSD-based payments? +

Yes. USSD is the dominant flow for several wallets and several merchant types in Africa, and we handle USSD payment flows end-to-end. We also monitor for the specific failure modes USSD introduces, including session timeouts that card-centric processors don’t track.

What’s a typical settlement window? +

Settlement windows vary by country, wallet, and the settlement currency you’ve chosen. The country pages under /countries/ list the current settlement window for each market. For most major corridors, settlement runs same-day to T+3.

Is mobile money taxed in my market? +

Several African countries levy transaction taxes or excise duties on mobile-money transactions, and the rates change. Tax treatment is set by the country, not by us; we surface the current rate per market on each country page under /countries/. Speak to your local tax advisor for what applies to your specific merchant setup.
