Where standard payment stacks fall short in Uganda

In Uganda the money moves on MTN MoMo, and a card checkout doesn't see it

PROBLEM 01

Card-only checkout is invisible to mobile-money customers

Uganda counts around 36.7 million1 active mobile money accounts, and together MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money hold more than 90%2 of the market with MTN the larger of the two. Card penetration is low by comparison. A business asking Ugandan customers for a card is asking for a payment method most of them don't carry.

PROBLEM 02

Standard processors don't reach mobile money

The payment tools most foreign businesses already use don't connect to MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money. So merchants either skip Uganda, or stitch together a local aggregator, a settlement partner, and an FX provider, and maintain all three.

PROBLEM 03

Stacked aggregators shrink what you keep

The usual global-processor-to-aggregator-to-local-partner-to-wallet stack costs up to 7%3 per payment and adds a failure point on every link. Plus a second cut when you convert Ugandan shillings into a currency your business can use.

How Paysnapper works in Uganda

One integration between your business and MTN & Airtel

There's one connection between Paysnapper and the wallet providers, and one API between your checkout and Paysnapper. No reseller chain stacked on top. You don't register a company in Uganda or run your own MTN MoMoPay merchant code. The chain you pay for is the chain we show you.

From checkout to settled revenue

Step 1. At checkout the customer enters their MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money number and gets a prompt on their phone. They confirm with their PIN, the way they pay for everything in Uganda

Step 2. Funds come to Paysnapper via a direct acquiring relationship with the wallet provider, not through a reseller. Every transaction is tracked, so a payment that stalls on the wallet side surfaces immediately rather than dropping your revenue without a trace.

Step 3. Funds collect in Ugandan shillings on your Paysnapper balance, with a clean record that maps every payment back to a customer.

Step 4. We convert and settle out in USD, EUR, GBP, USDT, USDC, or BTC, or straight to your company bank account, following Ugandan FX rules.

Can a foreign business accept MTN and Airtel Money payments in Uganda?

Yes. Paysnapper sits as one intermediary between your business and the mobile money networks, so you accept payments from Ugandan customers without registering a company in Uganda or holding your own MTN MoMoPay merchant code. We hold the local acquiring relationship and settle the revenue out to you.

Uganda and mobile money: why it works this way

In Uganda, mobile money is the market

Mobile money reshaped how Uganda pays. Today it's how most Ugandans move money, and the wallet - MTN or Airtel is the default way to pay a business. The demand is here. The only question is whether your checkout can take it

01

MTN & Airtel are the market

Around 36.7 millionactive mobile money accounts are in use across Uganda, and MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money together hold more than 90% of the market - MTN the larger, Airtel most of the rest. For a business, accepting both is most of the way to accepting Uganda

02

The scale here is real

Ugandans moved UGX 326.3 trillion transactionsacross 8.4 billion mobile money transactions in the year to June 2025. This isn't an emerging use case, it's the established way an entire country pays for goods and services.

03

Mobile money reaches almost everyone

Mobile money penetration in Uganda reached around 68% of adults by 2025. The people you want as customers already have a wallet and already use it daily. There's no behaviour to teach, only a payment method to accept.

04

Regulated and stable

Mobile money in Uganda operates under the Bank of Uganda and the National Payment Systems Act. Paysnapper works inside those rules for acquiring, settlement, and FX, so the way you get paid and paid out rests on a regulated base.

Why accept MTN and Airtel Money instead of cards in Uganda?

Uganda has around 34.6 million active mobile money subscribers, with MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money together holding more than 90% of the market, while card penetration is low. A card-only checkout is invisible to most Ugandan shoppers. Accepting both wallets is how you reach the people actually trying to pay you
